Why don't birds get lost on their long flights from one place to another? Scientists have
puzzled over this question for many years. Now they're beginning to fill in the blanks.

Not long age, experiments showed that birds rely on the sun to guide them during daylight hours. But what about birds that fly by night? Tests with artificial stars have proved that certain night - flying birds are able to follow the stars in their long - distance flights.

A dove (鸽子) had spent its lifetime in a cage and had never flown under a natural sky. Yet it showed an inborn ability to use the stars for guidance. The bird's cage was placed under an artificial star - filled sky. (76) The bird tried to fly in the same direction as that taken by his outdoor cousins. Any change in the position of the artificial stars caused a change in the direction of his flight.

(77) But the stars are apparently their principal means of navigation (航行) only. When the stars are hidden by clouds, they seemingly find their way by such landmarks as mountain ranges, coast lines, and river courses. But when it's too dark to see these, the doves circle helplessly, unable to find their way.

The reason why birds don't get lost on long flights ______.

A.have been known to scientists for many years

B.have only recently been discovered

C.are known by us

D.will probably remain a mystery

The biggest "dream factories" are in Hollywood, the capital of the film industry. Each year, Hollywood studios make hundreds of movies that are shown all over the world. Student participation (参与)in tike classroom is not only accepted but also expected of the student in many courses. Some professors base part of the final grade on the student’ s oral participation. Although there are formal lectures during which the student has a passive role(i. e. , listening and taking notes) , many courses are organized around classroom discussions, student questions, and informal lectures. In graduate discussions the profess or has a “manager”role and the students make presentations and lead discussions. The students do the actual teaching in these discussions.

A professor’ s teaching method is another factor (因素)that determines the degree and type of student participation. Some professors prefer to control discussion while others prefer to guide the class without controlling it. Many professors encourage students to question their ideas. Students who object to the professor’ s point of view should be prepared to prove their positions.

In the teaching of science and mathematics, the controlling mode of instruction is generally traditional, with teachers presenting formal lectures and students taking notes. However, new educational trends have turned up in the humanities and social sciences in the past twenty years. Students in education, society, and history classes, for example, are often required to solve problems in groups, design projects, make presentations, and examine case studies. Since some college or university courses are“practical” rather than theoretical, they pay more attention to “doing” for themselves.

Though they usually have to bear it for at least the first year, most U.S. university
students end dorm life as soon as they can. Residence(住校)choices at U.S. colleges and universities are as different as the institutions themselves, but the first-year dorm experience is generally a mandatory rite(仪式)of passage. Students often complain about the space, but compared with most Chinese dorm rooms those in the U.S. are costly and satisfying. Most students spend their first year in a double room, usually with an area of somewhere between 12 and 15 square meters. A standard room includes a sink(washbasin), a telephone, a bunk-bed, two desks and two wardrobes. Rooms often come equipped with cable TV and broadband Internet access. Students usually provide other extras for themselves-they buy or rent a mini-refrigerator and bring along a carpet, a computer and audiovisual equipment. Roommates are usually chosen by chance from among all the new students at the university, so it's quite likely you won't share any classes with your roommate. It's not only the lack of space, but the many rules that make students feel they've had enough after a year. Rules on visitors of the opposite sex and alcohol are considered by many as the most bothersome(讨厌的)。 Some students put much effort into making their rooms different, especially by using paint, but this can lead to fines. Many students who leave move into an apartment or share a house with friends. This offers more freedom and sometimes even costs less than residence hall living. But a few grow fond of dorm life and stay on for another year or even longer. The most devoted go on to serve as resident assistants, the enforcers(执行者)of rules.

1.Students usually have dorm life for at least one year because ().

B.It's not necessary that you share a room with your classmates

D.No one would like to go on with their dorm life after first-year dorm life experience

3.Which of the following is probably NOT the reason why students end their dorm life as soon as possible?()

A.Rooms are too small

B.Their roommates are not friendly

C.They don't like the many rules there

D.It is more expensive.

Television has changed the lifestyle. of people in every industrialized country in the wor
ld. In the United States, where sociologists have studied the effects, some interesting observations have been made.

Television, although not essential, has become an important part of most people’s lives. It alters people's ways of seeing the world; in many ways, it supports and sustains (维持) modern life. Television has become a baby-sitter, an introducer of conversations, the major transmitter of culture, a keeper of tradition. Yet when what can be seen on TV in one day is critically analyzed, it becomes evident that television is not a teacher but a sustainer; the poor quality of programming does not elevate (提高)people into greater understanding, but rather maintains and encourages the life as it exists.

The primary reason for the lack of quality in American television is related to both the history of TV programming development and the economics of TV. Television in America began with the radio. Radio companies and their sponsors first experimented with television. Therefore, the close relationship which the advertisers had with radio programs became the system for American TV. Sponsors not only paid money for time within programs, but many actually produced the programs. Thus, in American society, television is primarily concerned with reflecting and attracting society rather than experimenting with new ideas. Advertisers want to attract the largest viewing audience possible. To do so requires that the programs be entertaining rather than educational, attractive rather than challenging.

Television in America today remains, to a large extent, with the same organization and standards as it had thirty years ago. The hope for further development and true achievement toward improving society will require a change in the entire system.

According to the author American television is poor in quality because ______.

A.advertisers are interested in experimenting with new ideas

B.it is still at an early stage of development, compared with the radio

C.the programs have to be developed in the interests of the sponsors for economic reasons

D.it is controlled by radio companies

According to the majority of Americans, women are ...

According to the majority of Americans, women are every bit as capable of being good political leaders as men. The same can be said of their ability to dominate the corporate boardroom. And according to a new Pew Research Center survey on women and leadership, most Americans find women indistinguishable from men on key leadership traits such as intelligence and capacity for innovation, with many saying they’re stronger than men in terms of being passionate and organized leaders. So why, then, are women in short supply at the top of government and business in the United States? According to the public, at least, it’s not that they lack toughness, management talent or proper skill sets. It’s also not all about work-life balance.Although economic research and previous survey findings have shown that career interruptions related to motherhood may make it harder for women to advance in their careers and compete for top executive jobs, relatively few adults in the recent survey point to this as a key barrier for women seeking leadership roles. Only about one-in-five say women’s family responsibilities are a major reason why there aren’t more females in top leadership positions in business and politics. Instead, topping the list of reasons, about four-in-ten Americans point to a double standard for women seeking to climb to the highest levels of either politics or business, where they have to do more than their male counterparts to prove themselves. Similar shares say the electorate (选民) and corporate America are just not ready to put more women in top leadership positions. As a result, the public is divided about whether the imbalance in corporate America will change in the foreseeable future, even though women have made major advances in the workplace. While 53% believe men will continue to hold more top executive positions in business in the future, 44% say it’s only a matter of time before as many women are in top executive positions as men. Americans are less doubtful when it comes to politics: 73% expect to see a female president in their lifetime. (2019.6月四级真题) Q: What do we learn from previous survey findings about women seeking leadership roles?

A、They have unconquerable difficulties on their way to success.

B、They are lacking in confidence when competing with men.

C、Their failures may have something to do with family duties.

D、Relatively few are hindered in their career advancement.
