听力原文: My first semester of college was the worst I've been through. I had made plans during the summer to share an apartment with two of my close friends from high school. But before we moved in,problems started developing.

One of the two girls I was to share an apartment with was going to work instead of going to college。 However,a week before we were to move in,she found out that she didn't get the job. She is forced to live at home and look for work. The rest two of us lasted for a month and then agreed that we couldn't make it with the higher monthly rent payments. I started looking around.

I found another apartment and the rent wasn't bad. The place was noisy, but it was the best I could afford for the time. However, one day when I returned,I saw smoke coming from the back of the house. The cottage had caught fire, and my room was a burned mess。I was once more out of a place to stay.

I finally gave up looking around and moved home. I had to drive forty miles to school every day,so I almost spent as much on gas as I would have on lodging. I was very bored I almost lost the will to study. It had been really a bad semester!

(33)

A.To look for two of her close friends.

B.To stay at home and study.

C.To share an apartment with friends.

D.To move out and live alone.

My wife and I moved into our home nine years ago. We have a yard and a "rock garden&q
uot;. Therethe rocks appear to be just thrown up onto the dirt as if someone were in a hurry, to finish. Very oftenwhen we have more flowers, Denise or I would plant them between the rocks, just to add some colorto the area.

Last summer I found, in the rock garden, a tiny little plant that I could not immediatelyrecognize. I knew I didn&39; t plant it and Denise said she didn&39; t either. We decided to let it continuegrowing until we could find out what it was.

Weeks passed and as I made my way back to the strange plant, it appeared to&39;be a sunflower. Itlooked thin and tall with only one head on it. I decided to baby it along and weed(除草) around it.As I pulled rocks from the area to get to the weeds, I noticed something unusual. The sunflower hadnot started where I saw it begin. It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.

If a tiny little sunflower didn&39; t let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we too have theability to do the same thing. If we believe in ourselves like that little sunflower, we can reach wherewe aim to go and get what we need for growth.

We need to believe in ourselves knowing we have the ability to achieve our goals. Like thesunflower, it knew it had the ability to get over the rocks because it had faith in itself that it wouldsucceed. Stand tall like the sunflower and be proud of who and what we are, then other things will beginto support us. We will find a way to go under or around any "rocks" in order to realize our goals.

Why did the family plant flowers in the "rock garden"?

A.To attract visitors.

B.To remove the rocks.

C.To please their neighbors.

D.To make the area colorful.

The author let the tiny plant continue growingA.to see how long it could live

B.to see how big it could grow

C.to find out what it actually was

D.to know if his wife had planted it

Why did the author think the sunflower was unusual?A.It was very thin and tall.

B.It had only one head on it.

C.It grew on top of a big rock.

D.It began to grow under a rock.

What does the author want to say through the story?A.Rocks cannot prevent us from success.

B.Sunflowers are able to grow everywhere.

C.We should take good care of the rock gardens.

D.We can get over difficulties if we trust ourselves.

Do people stop once they have achieved something? No! In life, we are always trying to do t
hings better or having more of the same success.

Jane Fonda moved from being an Academy Award actress to a successful businesswoman. Her aerobics (有氧体操) workout videos have been sold around the world.

Athletes are constantly making greater and greater efforts to lower time for races;increase heights or distances.

The world of medicine has had its series of successes too. Christian Barnard performed several successful heart transplants. Other medical experts have achieved organ transplants. Throughout the ages, mankind has found treatment and cures for tuberculosis (肺结核) , cancer, and other diseases. A cure of AIDS might soon be discovered.

Age does not seem to slow down achievers. Tina Turner at 54 is still singing with great energy and attracting sell-out crowds wherever she goes.

At work, we go all out for achievements too. Success may mean organizing a conference more effectively and efficiently each year. Sometimes, it is not a pat on the back or the promotion that makes it worthwhile. Often it is the inner thrill and satisfaction of achievement, no matter how small it may be.

Aiming for success doesn’t mean you are greedy or dissatisfied. It is all part of gaining new experiences and dimensions in life. It finally makes you a more interesting and useful person in society.

The author pses Jane Fonda as an example to show that_________.

A.women can be successful as well

B.beautiful actresses are likely to be successful

C.successful people are not satisfied with their achievements

D.real successful people need to stand out in more than one field

In many stories on TV and in science-fiction books, men travel to faraway stars. They have quick, easy journeys. But so far, men have been able to reach only the earth’s own moon.

Suppose a man wanted to reach a distant star. Even if he traveled his whole life, he would have to move faster than the speed of the light. Nothing can move that fast except light itself.

Strange things happen to an object when it moves rapidly. The object weighs more. An object moving at 86 percent of the speed of light is twice as heavy as it is at rest. A stick appears shorter. A clock runs more slowly. A man would not age so fast as he would on the earth.

Light travels more than 186,000 miles a second, or about 11 million miles a minute. In one year, light travels six trillion miles. That great distance is called a light-year. It is used to measure distance in space.

The star closest to our sun is Alpha Centauri. It is more than four light-years away. If one traveled at the speed of light, he could make a round trip to Alpha Centauri in nine years. But, even at that speed, he could not reach Alcaid (北斗星) in the handle of the Big Dipper. A one-way journey to Alcaid would take almost 200 years

1.In this passage the words “closest to our sun” means the star().

A、the earth we live on

B、Alpha Centauri

C、the Big Dipper

D、the moon

2.A one-way journey to Alcaid would take().

A、about nine years

B、less than four years

C、almost 200 years

D、less than 100 years

3.Why do we measure the distance in light-years instead of miles?()

A、Units of light-years sound better.

B、Using light- years reduced the number of figures used.

C、We used to measure distance in light-years long ago.

D、We do not make mistakes when we use light-years.

4.If a stone moved at the speed of light, it().

A、would weigh twice more than it is motionless

B、would weigh as much as it is on earth

C、would weigh less than it is on earth

D、would not have weight at all

5.This story is mainly about ().

A、the distance between the sun and the other stars

B、the problems of traveling to faraway stars

C、what happens when we travel faster than the speed of light

D、the tool we use when we go to faraway stars
