Mercury Motoring Co (Mercury) specialises in manufacturing engine parts for motor cars and the company has a diverse customer base but seven significant customers. The company’s year end was 30 September 2015.
During the year, a number of the company’s significant customers have experienced a fall in sales, and consequently they have purchased fewer items from Mercury. As a result, Mercury has paid a number of its suppliers later than usual and some of them have withdrawn credit terms meaning the company must pay cash on delivery. One of Mercury’s main suppliers is threatening legal action to recover the sums owing. As a result of the increased level of payables, the company’s current ratio has fallen below 1 to 0·9 for the first time.
Mercury has produced a cash flow forecast to 30 June 2016 and this shows net cash outflows until May 2016. Mercury has a loan of $2·3 million which is due for repayment in full by 30 September 2016.
The finance director has just informed the audit manager that there is a possible change in legislation which will result in one of Mercury’s top product lines becoming obsolete as it will not comply with the proposed law. The prepared cash flow forecasts do not reflect this possible event.

Passage One
Animals react to the changing seasons with changes in mood and behavior. and human beings are no exception. Most people find they eat and sleep slightly more in winter and dislike the dark mornings and short days. For some, however, symptoms (症状) are severe enough to damage their lives and to cause considerable stress. These people are suffering from SAD. The symptoms tend to start from around September each year lasting until April, but are at their worst in the darkest months.
The standard figure says that around 2% of people in Northern Europe suffer badly, with many more (10%) putting up with milder symptoms. Across the world the incidence (发生率) increases with distance from the equator (赤道), except where there is snow on the ground, when it becomes less common. More women than men are found having SAD. Children and young people can also suffer from it.
The problem stems from the lack of bright light in winter. Researchers have proved that bright light makes a difference to the brain chemistry, although the exact means by which sufferers are affected is not yet known.
As the cause is lack of bright light, the treatment is to be in bright light every day by using a lightbox or a similar bright light treatment. (Going to a brightly-lit climate, whether skiing or somewhere hot, is indeed a cure. ) The preferred level of light is about as bright as a spring morning on a clear day and for most people sitting in front of a lightbox, allowing the light to reach the eyes, for between 15 and 45 minutes daily will be sufficient to alleviate the symptoms. The user does not have to stare at the light, but can watch TV or read a book, just allowing the light to reach the eyes. As long as the resources we consumed each year came primarily from within our own boundaries, this was largely an internal matter. This is the question we're going to have to answer, whether we're trying to persuade countries to step up their exports of oil to us or trying to convince them that we ought to be permitted to maintain our share of the world fish catch.
The prospect of a scarcity of, and competition for, the world's resources require that we reexamine the way in which we relate to the rest of the world. It means we find ways of cutting back on resource consumption that is dependent on the resources and cooperation of other countries. We cannot expect people in these countries to concern themselves with our worsening energy and food shortages unless we demonstrate some concern for the hunger, illiteracy and disease that are diminishing life for them.

In the study, the normally inactive subjects were divided into three roughly equal groups. The "long walker" took a hike of between 20 and 40 minutes every day. "Intermediate walkers" had two rounds of jogging of 10 to 15 minutes, and "short walkers" did three stints of 90 to 110 minutes. The controls sat at home, as usual.
At the start and end of the 18 weeks, the health and fitness of each group were measured and it was found that the long walkers were healthiest, as measured by altered fat profiles in their blood. At the end, each liter of blood from the long walkers contained an average 0.05 grains less apolipoprotein(阿朴脂蛋白) II, a "bad" fat that is linked with heart disease. This was more than twice the drop seen in the intermediate walkers, and five times that in short walkers. In the controls, the level of this fat stayed the same. The drop in apolipoprotein II in the long walker was matched by a rise in the blood level of apolipoprotein I, a "good" fat that is associated with smooth arteries.
