Until recently most historians spoke very critically of the Industrial Revolution. They【B1
】that in the long run industrialization greatly raised the standard of living for the【B2】man. But they insisted that its【B3】results during the period from 1740 to 1840 were widespread poverty and misery for the【B4】of the English population.【B5】contrast, they saw in the preceding hundred years from 1640 to 1740, when England was still a【B6】agricultural country, a period of great abundance and prosperity.

This view,【B7】is generally thought to be wrong. Specialists【B8】history and economics, have【B9】two things: that the period from 1640 to 1740 was【B10】by great poverty, and that industrialization certainly did not worsen and may have actually improved the conditions for the majority of the populace.

Washington Irving was America's first man of letters to be known internationally. His work
s were received enthusiastically both in England and in the United States. He was, in fact, one of the most successful writers of his time in either country, delighting a large general public and at the same time winning the admiration of fellow writers like Scott in Britain and Poe and Hawthorne in the United States. The respect in which he was held was partly owing to the man himself, with his warm friendliness, his good sense, his politeness, his gay spirits, his artistic integrity, his love of both the Old World and the New World. Thackery described Irving as"a gentleman, who, though himself born in no very high sphere, was most finished, polished, witty; socially the equal of the most refined Europeans". In England he was granted an honorary degree from Oxford—an unusual honor for a citizen of a young, uncultured nation—and he received the medal of the Royal Society of Literature; America made him ambassador to Spain. Irving's background provides little to explain his literary achievements. A gifted but delicate child, he had little schooling. He studied law, but without zeal, and never did practice seriously. He was immune to his strict Presbyterian(长老会教徒的)home environment, frequenting both social gatherings and the theater.

What is the most proper comment on Irving?

A.His works were very popular in England and the United States.

B.He was respected by many fellow writers.

C.He gained international fame by his personality and his works.

D.He is a gentleman.

Everyone knows that taxation is necessary in a modern state:【51】it, it would not be possib

In most countries, a direct tax on persons, 【57】is called income tax, exists. It is arranged in【58】a way that the poorest people pay nothing, and the【59】of tax grows greater as the taxpayers'【60】grows. In England, for example, the tax on the【61】people goes up as【62】as ninety-five percent!

But countries with direct taxation nearly always have【63】taxation too. Many things【64】into the country have to pay taxes or "duties".【65】, it is the men and women who buy these imported things in the shops who really have to pay the duties, in the【66】of higher prices. In some countries, too, there is a tax on things sold in the shops. If the most necessary things are taxed, a lot of money is collected, but the poor people suffer【67】If unnecessary things like jewels and fur coats are taxed, 【68】money is obtained, but the tax is fairer, as the【69】pay it.

Probably this last kind of indirect tax, 【70】with a direct tax on incomes which is low for the poor and high for the rich, is the best arrangement.
