Most dictionaries will tell you a number of【21】about a language. There are three things in
particular that【22】important. These three things are spelling, pronunciation, and meanings.

The first and most obvious thing is that a dictionary will【23】you the spelling of a word. If you' re not sure about the spelling of a word, you can try to find the correct spelling in a dictionary. Words are listed in alphabetical order--a, b, c, and so on .For example, on a dictionary page the word "poor" p, o, o, r--comes before "poverty"--p, o, v, e, r, t, y and the word "poverty" comes【24】the word "power'--p, o, w, e, r. The words are always given in alphabetical Order.

The second thing a dictionary will tell you is【25】. Most dictionaries give the pronunciation of a word in a special kind of alphabet. This special alphabet is called a phonetic, or sound alphabet. The phonetic spelling will tell you generally【26】a word is pronounced. There are a few different phonetic alphabets. Many dictionaries use the International Phonetic Alphabet to show pronunciation.

The【27】thing a dictionary will tell you is the meanings of words. You can【28】a word and find out what it means. Many words have more than one meaning, and a good dictionary will ex plain all of the word' s meanings. For example, in English the common word" get" has over 20 different meanings. The meaning, of course,【29】the sentence in which the word' is used.

These three things--spelling, pronunciation, and meanings--are some of the important【30】that you learn from dictionaries.

The two most obvious changes in American economy are the emergence of a highly sophist
icated technology and the rise of giant corporations. In addition, market forces have lost some of their significance as planning has become more important. The government has assumed a greatly changed role in the economy.Property relationships and decision-making power have shifted. The demand for highly educated specialists has increased enormously.

We may think of the American economy, as consisting of two completely different sectors. The world of the giant corporations, which can be called the "industrial system", consists of 500 or 600 firms that provide "nearly all communications, nearly all production and distribution of electric power, much transportation, most manufacturing and mining, a substantial share of retail trade, and a considerable amount of entertainment." Outside of this industrial system fall most agricultural enterprises, some mining and trucking, professional and artistic pursuits, some retail trade, and most personal and domestic services.

The classical economic laws of supply and demand still apply to some degree. But today the industrial sector is characterized far more by planning and certainty than by the free play of market forces. It appears that it could scarcely be otherwise. In large corporations with advanced technological systems and complex organizations of highly trained specialists, plans for producing any one item are made well in advance.Such plans, once made, are hard to change.Because long-term planning demands certainty, market forces are avoided by various means. For example, the corporation may achieve "vertical integration" by buying companies that supply raw materials at one end of the process and distribution outlets at the other.Corporations may agree on "just prices" for things they buy and sell. They may enter mutually advantageous long-term contracts with suppliers and customers. Moreover, in their quest for certainty they generally have the support of the state.

26.The American giant corporations possess so many new characteristics that

A) highly educated managers are important for the corporations

B giant corporations become decentralized

C economic laws of the market are effective inside corporations

D heads of the giant corporations try to control the government

27.By the second paragraph, we know that .

A retail trade accounts for a big part in non-industrial system

B there are more giant corporations than agricultural enterprises

C giant corporations control every part of American economy

D giant corporations provide most of productions and services

28.From the whole passage, we can infer that American economy .

A is experiencing the rise of giant corporations

B is determined by hundreds of giant corporations

C has failed to balance supply and demand

D becomes highly-planned one

29.In the third sentence of last paragraph, the second "it" may refer to.

A classic economic law of supply and demand

B industrial sector

C American economy

D market force

30.Which of the following is not mentioned in the passage?

A American economy is characterized by high technology and giant corporations.

B American economy consists of industrial systems and agricultural enterprises.

C.Market economy is gradually replaced by planned economy.

D Highly trained specialists are needed.

Four months ago Mrs. B. ordered a rug from a store which promised to deliver it in abo
ut two weeks. Three weeks passed, but the rug did not arrive. When Mrs. B. telephoned the store to ask about it, she was told that the rug had been lost and that the store would send her another.Weeks later, when Mrs. B. telephoned again, the store claimed that the second rug had been delivered and left on her front porch. She didn't believe this story, as she had been at home as usual, and her door bell was in good working order. However, the store promised her that a third rug would be delivered within a week. It wasn't. What could she do? How could she get action?

Mrs. B. did what many other Americans have done--with excellent results. She wrote a letter to the newspaper in her town, explaining her problem. A few days later her letter appeared in the newspaper, and this sentence was printed below it:

The store found a way to safely deliver your rug immediately after hearing from us.In this age of machines, it is often hard to get action from businesses that have made mistakes. An individual person can complain, but his complaints may accomplish nothing. Luckily, newspapers now employ people to help with such problems, and the results are published in a special section of the paper.Mrs. B's letter appeared in a column called MR. FIX-IT. During the same week the following letter from Mrs. J. was printed in the ACTION LINE column of another newspaper

"Many weeks ago I bought some living room furniture from the House and Garden Shop in Parkersville. They have set three delivery dates, and each time I had to stay home from work and wait for the truck, which never came. I have called the store at least fifteen times, and each time they have said they would look for the furniture. This has been going on for two months. I guess they are still looking. " The ACTION LINE writer's reply was printed below Mrs. J's letter: "They found it. Action Line made one telephone call to the president of the company, who told us: 'the customer will get satisfaction. ' The furniture was found, and it arrived at your home yesterday."
