Once a landlord wanted to plant garlic in his fields. He found a group of boys and asked t

hem to do the work for him. At lunch time he did not invite the boys to have lunch with his family. The boys had to sit by the door and have lunch on the ground. The landlord was afraid that other people would see the bad food for the boys. So with a smile on his face he said to them: “Boys, go and eat in the house. This is for your food. If you eat here by the door, the dogs will bite you.” The boys were surprised. But they said nothing and went to eat in the house. The landlord was quite pleased.

Supper time came and the boys went into the house again. When they walked past the landlord‘s room, they looked in through the window. What do you think they saw there? They saw a big table with white bread and all kinds of good food on it. The landlord and his family were sitting around the table and eating their dinner. But the food for the boys was bad. The boys were very angry. They wanted to teach the landlord a lesson. So they decided to plant his garlic upside down. And that was what they did the next day.

A few days later the garlic was coming out everywhere but not in the landlord‘s fields. The landlord was very surprised and asked the boys why this was so. “The garlic is afraid that the dogs will bite it,” the boys answered.

The landlord asked the boys to come because ________.

A.he wanted them to plant garlic for him

B.he wanted to invite them to have lunch with his family

C.he wanted to tell them to sit by the door

D.he wanted them to plant vegetables for him

In old days, when a glimpse of stocking was looked upon as something so shocking as to dis
tract the serious work of an office, secretaries were men.

Then came the First World War and the male secretaries were replaced by women. A man's secretary became his personal servant, in charge of remembering his wife's birthday and buying her presents; taking his suits to the dry-cleaners; telling lies on the telephone to keep away people he did not wish to speak to; and, of course, typing and filing and taking shorthand.

Now all this may be changing again. The microchip(芯片) and high technology is sweeping the British office, taking with it much of the routine clerical(文书的) work that secretaries did.

"Once office technology takes over generally, the status of the job will rise again because it will involve the high-tech work and then men will want to do it again. "

That was said by one of the executives(male) of one of the biggest secretarial agencies in this country. What he has predicted is already under way in the U. S.

Once high technology has made the job of secretary less routine (乏味的) , will there be a male takeover? Men should be careful of thinking that they can walk right into the better jobs. There are a lot of women secretaries who will do the job as well as men—not just because they can buy negligees(妇女长睡衣) for the boss's wife, but because they are as efficient and well trained to cope with word processors and computers as men.

Before 1914 female secretaries were rare because they______.

A.were less efficient and less trained than men

B.were looked down upon by men

C.would have disturbed the other office workers

D.wore stockings and were not as serious as men

I hear many parents complaining that their teenage children are rebelling. I wish it were
so. At young age you ought to be growing away from you parents. You should be learning to stand on your own two feet. But take a good look at the present rebellion. It seems that teenagers are a1l taking the same way of snowing that they disagree with their parents. Instead of striking out on their own, most of them are clutching at one another’s hands for reassurance.

They say they want to dress as they please, but all of them wear the same clothes. They set off in new directions in music, but all of them end up huddled round listening to the same record. Their reason for thinking or acting in this and that way is that the crowd is doing it.

It has become harder and harder for a teenager to stand up against the popularity wave and go his or her own way. These days every teenager can 1earn from the advertisements what a teenager should have and be. And many of today’s parents have come to award high marks for the popularity of their children.

All this adds up to a great barrier for the teenager who wants to find his or her own path. But the barrier is worth climbing over. The path is worth following. You may want to listen to classical music instead of going to a party. You may want to collect rocks when everyone else is collecting records.

You may have some thoughts that you don’t care to share at once with your classmates. Well,go to it. Find yourself. Be yourself. Popularity will come-will the people who respect you for who you are. That’s the only kind of popularity that really counts.

A.readers how to be popular with people around

B.teenagers how to learn to decide things for themselves

听力原文: In the field of marketing, consumer goods are classed according to the way in which they are purchased. The two main categories are convenience goods and shopping goods. Two lesser types are specialty goods and unsought goods.

People do not spend much time shopping for convenience items such as groceries, newspapers, toothpaste, razor blades, aspirin, and candy. The buying of convenience goods may be done routinely, as some families buy groceries once a week. Such regularly purchased items are called staples. Sometimes convenience products are bought on impulse, for example, someone has a sudden desire for an ice cream sundae on a hot day. Or they may be purchased as emergency items.

Shopping goods are items for which customers search. They compare prices, quality, and styles, and may visit a number of stores before making decisions. Buying an automobile is often done this way.

Shopping goods fall into two classes: those that are perceived as basically the same and those that are regarded as different. Items that are looked upon as basically the same include such things as home appliances, television sets, and automobiles. Having decided on the model desired, the customer is primarily interested in getting the item at the most favorable price. Items regarded as inherently different include clothing, furniture, and dishes. Quality, style. and fashion will either take precedence over price, or they will not matter at all.

Specialty goods have characteristics that impel customers to make special efforts to find them. Price may be no consideration at all. Specialty goods can include almost any kind of product. Normally, specialty goods have a brand name or other distinguishing characteristics.

Unsought goods are items a consumer does not necessarily want or need or may not even know about. Promotion or advertising brings such goods to the consumer's attention. The product could be something new on the market or it may be a fairly standard service, such as life insurance, for which most people will usually not bother shopping.

According to the speaker, what are convenience goods?

A.Commodities that people are in constant need of.

B.Goods that are convenient to use or purchase.

C.Items that people tend to buy under impulse.

D.Items that have to be bought once a week.
