Movies are the most popular form. of entertainment for millions of Americans. They go to t
he movies to escape their normal everyday existence and to experience a life more exciting than their own. They may choose to see a particular film because they like the actors or because they have heard the film has a good story. But the main reason why people go to the movies is to escape.

Sitting in a dark theater, watching the images on the screen, they enter another world that is real to them. They become involved in the lives of the characters in the movie, and for two hours, they forget all about their own problems. They are in a dream world where things often appear to be more romantic (浪漫的) and beautiful than in real life.

The biggest "dream factories" are in Hollywood, the capital of the film industry. Each year, Hollywood studios make hundreds of movies that are shown all over the world. American movies are popular because they tell stories and they are well-made. They provide the public with heroes who do things the average person would like to do but often can't. The Americans go to the movies mainly because they want______.

A.to enjoy a good story

Once upon a time (not so very long ago, either!) industrial goods were made to last foreve

Once upon a time (not so very long ago, either!) industrial goods were made to last forever. If you bought a ear or a stove, it was a once-in-a-lifetime investment(投资). You paid good money for it, and you took care of it. Nowadays industry has persuaded us that products shouldn't last a long time. It's cheaper to throw them away than it is to repair them. This has led directly to the "throw-away society" which is a tremendous waste of the earth's resources.

Just think of the cars that are traded in daily, just because they are out of style. Think of the expensive packaging material that is thrown away every time a new object is bought. And we consumers have to pay for that material! Our industrial society has turned us into spoiled children. This wastefulness has got ten us into the mess (困境) we are in now. When we have no resources left, then we'll start to take care of what we have. But why can't we act before this happens? Why can't we go back to being a society in which the prevention of waste is a virtue?

Products used to be made to last ______.

A.for at least five years

B.for ten years

C.for as long as you take good care of them

D.for your whole life

Directions: Read the following passage carefully. ...

Directions: Read the following passage carefully. The passage is followed by some questions or unfinished sentences. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D. Choose the best answer to each question. Questions 1 to 5 are based on the same passag Feeling lonely? Why not go to the mall? You'll find plenty of company, and yes, a new pair of shoes or maybe even a new computer game. It's quick and effortless; and you don't need special equipment. You just get in your car and drive to a store. They're everywhere, and they're open 24 hours in any weather. Most of people think of shopping as something we do when we need to buy things, but some people shop for different reasons. In fact, if shopping is your favorite hobby, something you can easily do to change your mood, you might feel great. However, if you are not careful, the total on your credit card bills will soon be more than you have in your bank account. Because shopping is so enjoyable and convenient, people get into the dangerous habit of spending money to try to feel good. They become trapped in a cycle of self-defeating behavior. that leads to debt and dissatisfaction. How do you know if you are a compulsive spender? There is no easy answer. But ask yourself this: Do you have clothes in your closet that you never wear or that still have the price tags on them? Do you ever hide your purchases from your family? These are some of the warning signs. Most compulsive spenders are unaware of their habits or strongly deny them. Compulsive spenders prefer to avoid the issues that force them to shop, so the problem is not just that they spend more than they earn. Spending problems may result from deep personal problems that compulsive spenders have. Some spontaneous spending is natural: flowers to brighten a rainy day, or a treat for a job well done. To be spontaneous means to act without planning. However, a compulsive spender will shop in response to stress and follow a real physical urge to go out and spend money. When this type of spending causes serious problems for you and your family, you have a compulsive spending problem. Question 11 is based on the above passage. According to the passage, people usually go shopping ________.

A、when they want to hang out with friends

B、when they feel lonely and bored

C、when they need to buy things

D、when they want the pleasure of spending money

My wife and I moved into our home nine years ago. We have a yard and a "rock garden&q

It actually had begun under a big rock and grown under and around it to reach the sun.

If a tiny little sunflower didn&39; t let a big rock stand in its way of developing, we too have theability to do the same thing. If we believe in ourselves like that little sunflower, we can reach wherewe aim to go and get what we need for growth.
