We all associate colors with feelings and attitudes. In politics, dark blue often means "t

radition", and red means "social change". But blue can also mean sadness (I'm feeling blue). White is often for purity, although in China white is worn for funerals, and red is used to express the joy of a wedding, in western Europe white is worn at weddings and black for funerals. Advertisers are aware of the importance of selecting colors according to the way people react to them. Soap powders come in white and light blue packets (clean and cold, like ice); cereals often come in brown packets (tike wheat fields), but cosmetics never come in brown jars (dirty).

Where do these ideas come from? Max Luscher from the University of Geneva believes that in the beginning life was dictated by two factors beyond our control: night and day. Night brought passivity, and a general slowing down of metabolism; day brought with it the possibility of action, and increased in the metabolic rate, thus providing us with energy and initiative. Dark blue, therefore, is the color of quietness and passivity, bright yellow the color of hope and activity.

In prehistoric times, activity as a rule took one of two forms: either we were hunting and at- tacking, or we were being hunted and defending ourselves against attack. Attack is universally re- presented by the color red; serf-preservation by its complement green.

In Luseher's view, the association of colors with feeling and attitudes can be traced back to______.

A.the association of day and night with passivity and action in ancient time

B.the association of black with funerals in western Europe

C.the association of white with purity in some countries

D.the association of red with joy in China

阅读:W hat is the importance of the Afro American history to all Americans

Questions 36 to 40 are based on the following passage:

W hat is the importance of the Afro American history to all Americans? How could Afro Americans contribute anything to American history when they were just slaves and servants? This is the image which many of us are taught when we go to school. This is the image many Afro Americans have of themselves also. The Afro Americans need to remake their real historical image so that it is known and accepted in its truthfulness by themselves and the rest of the world. Men and women of darker color are human beings entitled to respect and acceptance in history. When we think of famous scientists and inventors we immediately think of men such as Alexander Graham Bell, Thomas Edison and Jonas E.Salk. This is because we associate famous people with the Anglo Saxon race. But what about the Afro American inventors and scientists? How many men during World War Ⅰ owe their lives to Garrett Morgan who invented the gas mask? Garrett Morgan also invented the traffic light which saves numerous lives on our streets. Daniel Hale Williams was the first successful heart surgeon. Charles Drew saved hundreds of thousands of lives during World War II by his discovery of the ways and means of preserving blood plasma. Percy Julian has helped millions suffering from the excruciating pain of arthritis. These men and others should be as easily recognized as Bell, Edison and Salk.

America is made up of many different blends of cultures. These many cultures have come to enrich and diversify the American way of life. We should not think, because history has neglected to include the background of a particular culture, that these people have an inferior history. We should search for the truth and set the record straight against the slanders, the stereotyping and false images which have identified these people. We should understand each of the cultures and learn of their specific contribution to America's life story.

Only after we are taught the complete and accurate history of our great country and learn that the blending of cultures and backgrounds gives us ourstrength, can we go forward on the path to peace.

36. The function of the first paragraph is to ____.

A) present the main idea or the summary of the essay

B) present an introduction to the topic

C) provide background to the main theme

D) present many cultures have contributed to American history

37. Which of the following statements is true?

A) Graham Bell, T.Edison and J.E.Salk are not very important people.

B) Black people who contribute to society should have equal recognition with their white colleagues.

C) We should not associate famous people with the Anglo Saxon race only.

D) G.Morgan, D.H.Williams and Charles Drew were not Afro Americans.

38. Paragraph three tells us that ____.

A) we should oppose slander and stereotyping

B) the American way of life is richer because it is made up of many cultures

C) some cultures have been completely neglected

D) Afro Americans have an inferior history

39. The word “image” refers to ____.

A) picture B) portray C) impression D) similar

40. The main idea of the passage is ____.

A) There are many Afro Americans who are famous as scientists and inventors

B) Many Afro Americans have devoted to American history

C) Afro American experience to American history

D) Afro American history must be recognized as an important part of American history

Task 1

Directions: After reading the following passage, you will find 5 questions or unfinished statements, numbered 36 through 40. For each question or statement there are 4 choices marked A, B, C, and D. You should make the correct choice.

The purpose of any selection interview is to choose the right person for the job in question or to select someone who shows potential for more senior posts. Interviews may not be the ideal method of selecting staff. For one thing, you will not know whether you have selected wisely until long after the interview. The period you have to wait will depend on the job in question. The lower the level of the job is, the quicker you will discover how good you were with your selection. Be clear what you are trying to achieve by the interview and how you intend to do it.

Interviewing requires many skills which typically only develop with practice. Be careful that you are not being subjective in your judgments(判断); try to be objective wherever possible. An example may illustrate the point. If you interview a long-haired male applicant, you may be put off by the length of his hair; you may associate the long hair with untidiness, dirt or laziness.

This is a subjective judgment—another interviewer may not be affected by hair length in the same way.

Subjective misjudgment is sometimes called the "halo and horn" effect. We meet someone neatly dressed and well-spoken, and from this we assume that they are all things good; that they will be reliable, honest, hard working, etc. We are blinded by their halo. Conversely, on meeting a roughly-spoken, scruffy(褴褛的)individual we decide they will be unreliable, careless and lazy. We only see their horns. This problem needs to be overcome, since we could so easily overlook first-class candidates(候选人)for vital posts because we have not been objective.

Which of the following best summarizes the main idea of the essay?

A.Things to pay attention to when interviewing job applicants.

B.Things to pay attention to when applying for a job.

C.Advice to how to be subjective.

D.The importance of a selection interview.

According to a survey, which was based on the responses of over 188,000 students, today's
traditional-age college freshmen are "more materialistic and less altruistic(利他主义的)"than at any time in the 17 years of the poll.

Not surprising in these hard times, the student's major objective "is to be financially well off. Less important than ever is developing a meaningful philosophy of life". It follows then that today the most popular course is not literature or history but accounting.

Interest in teaching, social service and the "altruistic" fields is at a low. On the other hand, enrollment in business programs, engineering and computer science is way up.

That's no surprise either. A friend of mine (a sales representative for a chemical company) was making twice the salary of her college instructors her first year on the job—even before she completed her two-year associate degree.

While it's true that we all need a career, it is equally true that our civilization has accumulated an incredible amount of knowledge in fields far removed from our own and that we are better for our understanding of these other contributions- be they scientific or artistic. It is equally true that, in studying the diverse wisdom of others, we learn how to think. More important, perhaps, education teaches us to see the connections between things, as well as to see beyond our immediate needs.

Weekly we read of unions who went on strike for higher wages, only to drive their employer out of business. No company; no job. How shortsighted in the long run!

But the most important argument for a broad education is that in studying the accumulated wisdom of the ages, we improve our moral sense. I saw a cartoon recently which shows a group of businessmen looking puzzled as they sit around a conference table; one of them is talking on the intercom(对讲机): "Miss Baxter", he says, "could you please send in someone who can distinguish right from wrong?"

From the long-term point of view, that's what education really ought to be about.

According to the author's observation, college students ______.

A.have never been so materialistic as today

B.have never been so interested in the arts

C.have never been so financially well off as today

D.have never attached so much importance to mutual sense
