Most people do not think of fishes and other sea animals as having voices, and of those wh

o are aware of the fact that many of them can "speak", few understand that these "conversations" have significance. Actually, their talk may be as meaningful as much of our own. For example, some sea animals use their "voices" to locate their food in the ocean expanses (广阔的区域); others use their "voices" to let their fellows know of their locations; and still others, as a means of obtaining mates. Sometimes, "speaking" may even mean the difference between life and death to a sea animal. It appears in some cases that when a predator (食肉动物) approaches, the prey (被捕的动物) depends on no more than the sounds it makes to escape.

Fish sounds are important to man, also. By listening to them, he can learn a great deal about the habits of creatures that make them, the size of the School they form, the patterns of their migrations, and the nature of the environments in which they live. He can also apply this information to the more effective utilization of the listening spots he has set up to detect enemy submarines (潜水艇). A knowledge of fish sounds can avoid confusion and unneeded effort when a "new" sound is picked up and the sound sentry (哨兵) must decide whether or not to call an alarm.

Among the people who know that many sea animals have voices, few ______.

A.know the meaning of their conversations

B.realize that they can communicate with each other

C.realize that they can make speeches

D.could understand their conversations

阅读理解:阅读下面的短文,根据文章内容进行判断,正确写“T”错误写“F”。

Meetings are very common nowadays. They can be weekly, monthly or annually. Some people think most meetings feel like a waste of time. They seem pointless and boring at times.

Then how do you run an effective meeting?

First, assign roles, such as greeter, timekeeper and note taker, so that you, the organizer, can be free to lead discussions and presentations.

Next, take charge from the start. Everyone will listen to you and join your discussion if you take charge in every aspect of the meeting. Show everyone that you really know what you are talking about, and everything that you talk about is useful.

Most important of all, follow the agenda. At the end of the meeting, spend a little extra time for the participants to discuss anything that needs to be immediately discussed but which may not have been on the agenda.

Always ask the participants questions to speak their minds and keep them interested. Remember that a good meeting is a two-way communication. Be open to everyone's opinion, ideas, and suggestions. Don't forget to thank them for the ideas they present.

And finally, close the meeting with everyone knowing what is expected of them and what they should do for the following weeks.Then, send out meeting minutes within a few days, while everyone still remembers the points.

1. A successful meeting should have different people to play different roles. {T、F}

2. Generally people only discuss the items listed on the agenda in a successful meeting.{T、F}

3. An unsuccessful meeting might be full of single-way communication. {T、F}

4. When the meeting is closed, it means there is nothing to do in the following weeks. {T、F}

5. Minutes should be sent out to the participants within a month after the end of the meeting. {T、F}

Why do people shrink?

Did you ever see the movie Honey,I shrunk the kids? It’s about a wacky dad(who’s also a scientist)wh0 accidentally shrinks his kids with his homemade miniaturizing invention.0ops! ____(1).

For older people,shrinking isn’t that dramatic or sudden at all. There are a flew reasons.As people get older,they generally lose some muscle and flat from their bodies as part of the natural aging process.Gravity (the force that keeps your feet on the ground) take hold,and the bones in the spine,called vertebrae,may break down or degenerate,and start to collapse into one another_____ (3).But perhaps the most common reason why some older people shrink is because

Did you know that every day you do a shrinking act? You aren’t as tall at the end of the day as you are at the beginning.That’s because as the day goes on,water in the disks of the spine gets compressed(squeezed)due to gravity,making you just a tiny bit shorter.Don’t worry,though._____(5)

People can be addicted to different things—e.g., alcohol, drugs, certain foods, or even te
levision. People who have such an addiction are compulsive, i.e., they have a very powerful psychological need that they feel they must satisfy. According to psychologists, many people are compulsive spenders: they feel they must spend money. This compulsion, like most others, is irrational—impossible to explain reasonably. For compulsive spenders who buy on credit, charge accounts are even more exciting than money. In other words, compulsive spenders feel that with credit, they can do anything. Their pleasure in spending enormous amounts is actually greater than the pleasure that they get from the things they buy.

There is a special psychology of bargain hunting. To save money, of course, most people look for sales, low prices and discounts. Compulsive bargain hunters, however, often buy things they don't need just because they are cheap. They want to believe that they are helping their budgets, but they are really playing an exciting game: when they can buy something for less than other people, they feel that they are winning. Most people, experts claim, have two reasons for their behavior. a good reason for things that they do and the real reason.

It is not only scientists, of course, who understand the psychology of spending habits, but also business people. Stores, companies, and advertisers use psychology to increase business: they consider people's needs for love, power, or influence, their basic value, their beliefs and opinions, and so on in their advertising and sales methods.

Psychologists can often use a method called "behavior. therapy" to help individuals solve their personality problems. In the same way, they can help people who feel that they have problems with money.

According to the psychologists, a compulsive spender is one who spends large amounts of money ______.

A.and takes great pleasure from what he or she buys

B.in order to satisfy his or her basic needs in life

C.just to meet his or her strong psychological need

D.entirely with an irrational eagerness

Psychologists have discovered that even the most independent-minded of us will conform

Psychologists have discovered that even the most independent-minded of us will conform. to social pressure when we are with a group of people. In one classie experiment, people were showna vertical line and asked to find a line of identical length from a selection of three.

You might think that this is an absurdly easy task, and when people perform. it by themselves they do it very well. However, psychologists have discovered that we are very easily swayed by the opinions of other people when we do this task in a group. In one study, a group of three people was set up,where two of the people were confederates(同伙 )of the experimenter.When the confederates deliberately gave wrong answers,people were often swayed to give the wrong answer also. In fact, 75% of people gave at least o ne wrong answer, with some people conforming to peer pressure on every occasion.

But why do people conform. in this way? In an easy task like this, it seems that people do not want to step out of line with the prevailing opinion of the group. On more difficult tasks, people also conform. because they lose onfidence in their own ability to make decisions and prefer to trust the majority opinion instead.

A typical example of this kind of conformity arises when we come across people in distress. Would you help a woman who has been attacked in the street?It turns out that you are much more likely to go to her assistance if you are alone.When other people are also around,a diffusion of responsibility occurs.
