Most children with healthy appetites are ready to eat almost anything that is offered them
and a child rarely dislikes food【21】it is badly cooked.

The way a meal is cooked and served is most important and an【22】served meal will improve a child's appetite. Never ask a child【23】he likes or dislikes a food and never discuss likes and dislikes in front of him or allow【24】else to do so. If the father says he hates fat meat or the mother refuses vegetables in the child's hearing he is【25】to copy this procedure. Take it【26】granted that he likes everything and he probably will. Nothing healthful should be omitted for the meal because of a supposed dislike. At meal times it is a good idea to give a child a small portion and let him come back for a second helping rather than give him as.【27】as he is likely to eat all at once. Do not talk too much to the child【28】meal times, but let him get on with his food, and do not allow him to leave the table immediately after a meal or he will soon learn to swallow his food so he can hurry back to his toys. Under【29】circumstances must a child be coaxed (哄骗)【30】forced to eat.

By midday, the small party of boys, led by their schoolmaster, had reached a height of 2,
500 feet. At this point the party had to stop climbing because one of the boys became seriously ill. The only thing the master could do was to return to the mountain hut where they had spent the night. From there, he telephoned the police. As no rescue party could reach the boy quickly enough, the Royal Air Force Rescue Center sent a helicopter with a policeman and a doctor on board. The helicopter soon arrived on the scene, but the Sides of the mountain were so steep that it could not land. A helicopter usually lands on four wheels, but it can land on two. However, the slope was too steep even for that. The pilot, therefore, kept the helicopter in the air with only one wheel touching the mountainside while the party carried the boy on board.

The group of boys had to stop because ______.

A.they had reached the peak

B.one of the boys was badly injured

C.one of the boys was sick

D.they had to return to the hut

Friends become a child's chosen family. If his social life is going well, he gains confide
nce. If he has trouble connecting, it hurts and can make him feel sad and withdrawn and lonely.

1. Help your child communicate. Naturally outgoing kids have an easier time expressing their interest in other children than shy ones do. But you can help build this skill through practice. Ask your child about his favorite games and toys. Praise him for specifics when he shows interest in other people: "You were so nice to let Roger talk about his little dog. I am proud of you."

2. Keep play short and sweet. Parents should keep early play dates short, so no one gets too fired and everyone has fun. Schedule the next one soon after that, so kids can quickly build on their comfort foundation.

3. Know your child. If your child is bossy, talk with him and agree before hand on which toys will be shared and which ones should be put away because your child just can't seem to share them. If you have a shy child, match him with a younger child so he has a chance to be the leader.

4. Help your child help others. Encourage your child to be a better friend by helping him include others in play. If you see someone being excluded, don't ignore it. This is an opportunity to work on your child's ability to understand others. "Rachel is being left out. That must make her feel very sad. Can you think or a way to include her in the game?"

5. Help your kids help themselves. If your child is the one who's being ignored or treated badly, teach him to speak up.

Which word can best describe a child who is good at connecting?

A.Bossy.

B.Confident.

I shall never forget the day when the earthquake took place. The time was about 5 o’clock in the afternoon and I was driving along the road to take my daughter from school. Our plan was to go swimming together. I had finished my work at 4 o’clock and then gone to the Post Office. Then I stopped off at a shop in order to get some fresh fruit. We liked to have some fruit to eat after our swim.

I was driving along a high road on my way to my daughter’s school. Over my road was another road which was built like a bridge for cars coming to the other way. I was hungry so I put the bag of apples in the seat beside me and started to eat one.

Suddenly I saw the cars in front of me start to move from side to side. Then my car started to shake!I didn’t know what was happening. “Not too bad,” I said,“But my feet and legs feel as if they’re broken.”“We’ll have you out of there just as soon as we can.” They didn’t get me out until the next morning. I had been in my car for fourteen hours.

The dog, called Prince, was an intelligent animal and a slave to Williams. From morning ti
ll night, when Williams was at home, Prince never left his sight, practically ignoring all other members of the family. The dog had a number of clearly defined duties, for which Williams had patiently trained him and, like the good pupil he was, Prince lived for the chance to demonstrate his abilities.

When Williams wanted to put on his boots, he would murmur" boots" and within seconds the dog would drop them at his feet. At nine every morning, Prince ran off to the general store in the village, returning shortly not only with Williams ' daily paper but with a half-ounce packet of Williams' favorite tobacco, John Rainey's Mixed. A gun dog by breed, Prince possessed a large soft mouth specially evolved for the safe carrying of hunted creatures, so the paper and the tobacco came to no harm, never even showing a tooth mark.

Williams was a railway man, an engine driver, and he wore a blue uniform. which smelled of oil and oil fuel. He had to work at odd times—"days" , "late days" or" nights". Over the years Prince got to know these periods of work and rest, knew when his master would leave the house and return, and the dog did not waste this knowledge. If Williams overslept, as he often did, Prince barked at the bedroom door until he woke, much to the annoyance of the family. On his return, Williams'slippers were brought to him, the paper and tobacco too if previously under livered.

A curious thing happened to Williams during the snow and ice of last winter. One evening he slipped and fell on the icy pavement somewhere between the village and his home. He was so badly shaken that he stayed in bed for three days; and not until he got up and dressed again did he discover that he had lost his wallet containing over fifty pounds. The house Was turned upside down in the search, but the wallet was not found. However, two days later — that was five days after the fall — Prince dropped the wallet into William's hand. Very muddy, stained and wet through, the little case still contained fifty three pounds, Williams' driving license and a few other papers. Where the dog had found it no one could tell, but found it he had and recognized it probably by the faint oily smell on the worn leather.

How did the dog perform. his duties?

A.He was delighted to show them off.

B.He did his test but was not often successful.

C.He did them quickly to get them over.

D.He had few opportunities to do them.
